Ahoy there, matey! Get your pirate’s booty over to Navy Pier—Tall Ship Windy is now open for the season! Offering programs that are educational, creative, and inspiring, with a variety of daily sailing adventures as well as educational tours, Tall Ship Windy has something for everyone, from experienced sailors to rookie landlubbers.
The official flagship of the City of Chicago, Tall Ship Windy is the first certified, four-masted, traditional gaff topsail schooner built in the U.S. since 1921. Though it is made with modern materials, it has a 19th century design reminiscent of the great Age of Sail. At 148 feet long, it can accommodate up to 150 passengers and is complete with three decks, a galley (kitchen), and a grand salon!
With the goal of bringing sailing to the public in a fun, educational, historical, and creative capacity, Tall Ship Windy offers a variety of daily adventures. Each 75-minute sail has a tour theme and takes a unique course, depending on the wind.
Grab a drink from the bar and learn about Chicago’s rich maritime heritage while admiring breathtaking views of the city with the Lakeside Architecture or Skyline sails. Hear incredible stories of piracy on the Great Lakes on the Real Pirates of the Inland Seas tour, or touch the tools of the trade and get a rare behind-the-scenes look at the life of a Tall Ship sailor on the A Sailor’s Life for Me! tour.
If you don’t spook easily, join the Spirit Ships and Haunted Harbors sail for spine-tingling legends and lore. If you’re looking for something extra-special, book a cruise beneath Navy Pier’s fireworks, or take the after-work Whale Watching Tour. Disclaimer: There might not actually be any whales in Lake Michigan, but the first beer is free, and if you make enough visits to the bar, you just might see a whale!
