Graffiti in the Garden

Graffiti in the Garden

February 14, 2013

At the Chicago Flower & Garden Show’s, “The Art of Gardening,” expect more than a lily-laden Monet. Paired with horticulture, Second-City style spray paint, and street art, the show will catch the eyes and spirit of Chicago.

Illustration, sculpture, and photography by Chicago artists Emmy Star Brown, Jeffrey Breslow and David Weinberg, will share the stage with local taggers Eduardo Ponce and Richard Ramirez, whose graffiti art will enliven the walls surrounding the show’s photo horticulture competition gallery. Just as the “The Art of Gardening” breaks convention with this urban art form, Ramirez says painting for the show is a step outside the box for he and Ponce.

Ramirez and Ponce have been painting together since high school and were friends before that. Growing up in disadvantaged and dangerous neighborhoods, graffiti was an outlet for expression and an alternative to gangs and crime. The show’s organizers chose Rodriguez and Ponce for their visually stunning portfolios and their ability to capture Chicago’s personality through their images.

Admire their take on Willis Tower, painted in a perspective that will make you feel as if you are standing at the base of its iconic 110 stories, dwarfed by towering sunflowers and tulips. The city’s powder blue, red and white flag will ripple across another panel with its six-pointed stars replaced by rosettes. And, no Chicago tribute would be complete without a nod to cuisine, so a jumbo-sized hot dog trimmed with buds and blooms defines a third panel.
