Chicago Flower and Garden Show Happenings

February 29, 2012

Are you ready to shed those winter chills and warm up to spring? The Chicago Flower and Garden Show is the place to be! It’s a full week of events, March 10-18, which will inspire and educate the gardener in everyone! There are so many events to partake in; who knows know where to start!

Potting parties, seed swap and more!

The Flower and Garden Show boasts Potting Parties, conducted four times daily! This popular Show attraction lets you participate in a hands-on workshop where industry professionals teach you techniques and offer insights to create your very own container gardens. The workshops will be taking place at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 3 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. every day, so there are plenty opportunities to get creative and get in touch with your inner gardener.

The Chicago Flower and Garden Show will also be hosting the first-ever “Great Chicago Seed Swap” on March 11th! Tables will be set up for annual, perennial and edible seeds. All gardeners are welcome: backyard, community, school… every type of gardener! In order to participate, just package your home-saved seeds in paper coin envelopes or plastic baggies. Print, as clearly as possible, the name of the seed and any other information a gardener may need to successfully grow the plants!

Learn floral design with Master Gardner Michael Gaffney!

Master Gardner Michael Gaffney will be at the Chicago Flower and Garden Show teaching floral design every day at 12:30 p.m.! Take part in this opportunity to learn from the master! For those of you who are not familiar with Michael Gaffney, his work includes flowers for film, television, runway and magazines. He recently opened for the Macy’s Flower Show in New York City’s Herald Square and designed the flowers for last year’s Oscar winner “Black Swan”! He is also the author of the new book Design Star: Lessons from the New York School of Flower Design.

Besides these spectacular events, there are a few others that might spark an interest in horticulture.  A Preview Benefit will be held March 9 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., enabling attendees to catch a glimpse of the gardens before the show officially opens to the public. Guests to this special event may also get tips and techniques for growing nutritious fruits and veggies for the whole family, see a Green Roof demo, take master photography classes with Allen Rokach, meet the “Days of our Lives” cast, and participate in the annual “Mix and Mingle” soiree.

After visiting the Chicago Flower and Garden Show, everyone will leave with a green thumb! Happy gardening!
