Stateroom pageants. Backroom politics. A day in the life at the court of King Henry VIII. That’s right, Henry VIII, one of the last plays Shakespeare ever wrote, is finally coming to the Chicago Shakespeare Theater stage! When can you catch it? Try April 30-June 16.
Under the brilliant direction of Barbara Gaines, Henry VIII will give its audience an opportunity to discover Shakespeare’s unparalleled understanding of the nuances of truth and fiction, of history and myth, and of our collective human condition.
The story picks up with King Henry VIII, England’s most opulent king—notorious for his habit of wedding and beheading—mid-career. After eight pregnancies, Queen Catherine, the first of Henry’s six wives, has only managed to give birth to one child named Mary. The succession to the throne, however, depends upon the birth of a male heir. Determined to sire an heir, Henry looks to Rome to annul his twenty-year marriage. What ensues is the political machinations and the exploits of a king’s reign.
Along with the nearly daily performances of this Shakespearean classic, CST will be hosting Audience Enrichment sessions. This program is a half-hour lecture scheduled one hour before the curtain on select weekends and offers audiences the opportunity to learn more about the production both from a scholarship and performance point-of-view. The sessions are free and no reservations are necessary. CST will also host Talk Backs following every Wednesday matinee performance. These post-show discussions give audience members the chance to ask the cast questions about the performance they just experienced.
Henry VIII will be performed in Chicago Shakespeare’s Courtyard Theater. And don’t forget— CST ticket holders are guaranteed indoor parking at the Navy Pier Garages. When parking says “full,” simply tell Navy Pier Security that you’re “here for Shakespeare,” and continue to the Theater’s dedicated parking entrance.
Want to make a day of it? We have great dining spots here at Navy Pier, not to mention one of the best views of Chicago’s skyline! We also host family-oriented entertainment and events throughout the Pier!
