Chicago is always celebrating something and starting this Saturday, September 15, the city begins its annual month-long celebration of Hispanic Heritage.
If Saturday still feels too far away, then come to the Landshark Beer Garden at Navy Pier to get the festivities started a little early with a free Hispanic Heritage Kick-Off fiesta on Friday, September 14 from 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Friday night brings the wonderful folks at Arte y Vida Chicago, a local foundation dedicated to promoting cultural diversity and celebrating Hispanic arts and culture, to Landshark Beer Garden for a special concert in honor of their 5th anniversary.
The party starts off with a set from Soulphonetics, a Chicago DJ collective spinning the smooth grooves of jazz, house, hip-hop, and Afro-Latin rhythms, and finishes with the phenomenal Canteca de Macao. Canteca de Macao, a nine-person band with roots in Spain, Venezuela, and Chile, plays a mix of music all their own, influenced by genres like reggae, rumba, and flamenco. Both sets are guaranteed to get hips moving, toes tapping, or fists pumping – whatever style of dance you prefer.
Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations continue the next day with dance performances, co-sponsored by Chicago’s National Museum of Mexican Art. On Saturday, September 15 from 12:30 p.m. to 5 p.m., the entire family is invited to Landshark Beer Garden for two free afternoon performances.
The first features the BYNC Ballet Folklorico group, a troupe who works primarily with youth and adults from the Back of the Yards community, teaching them traditional folk dances that they later perform at events all across the city. The second set of performers is the lively and colorful dancers of the Ballet Folklorico Nacional de Victor Soria, another local troupe performing the traditional folk styles of Mexican dance.
Naturally, all that dancing and dance-watching will work up a sweat and an appetite, and Landshark Beer Garden’s got you covered with great food and drink options! And when the day’s festivities come to an end, make sure you check out all the other fun that’s to be had at Navy Pier!
