Get ready for a battle of epic proportions! November 9-11, Navy Pier hosts Magic: The Gathering Grand Prix Chicago.
Have you ever indulged in Magic? This trading card game has been around since 1993 and has the same world-wide cult appeal as games like Nintendo’s Pokémon (remember this craze in the 90s?), World of Warcraft, and even Mystic Warlords of Ka’a from the hilarious sitcom, The Big Bang Theory.
The game seems simple: players take on the persona of a mighty wizard and then battle each other using spells, creatures, and other items depicted on their Magic cards in an effort to weaken their opponent and win the battle. But, like any good game, this one requires strategy in addition to a well-stacked deck.
Grand Prix Chicago is one of many professional Magic: The Gathering tournaments. For those involved this is more than just a casual trading card game, especially when up to $5000 worth of game-specific prizes and an invitation to one of the Pro Tours are at stake. The passion, drama, and camaraderie that exist at MTG events can sweep anyone into the excitement even if they’ve never played the game before.
Not quite on the professional level? MTG players love to share their knowledge so come by to rub elbows with the very best, learn tips and tricks of the trade, and purchase, sell, or trade cards with vendors and fellow MTG players.
Good luck to all of the competitors at the Grand Prix Chicago event and may victory be yours!
