Hey Navy Pier fans! We’re hitting the home stretch to Snow Days 2013! Just a week left until our fabulous winter weekend kicks off!
If you feel an extra chill in the air, Old Man Winter’s not completely to blame. We’re making all of the snow in preparation for our big snow sculpture competition. All in all, our sculptors will be using around 8000 cubic feet of snow, which in laymen’s terms converts to a whole lot of snow!
This year we’re hosting 15 professional teams hailing from the States, Spain, Mexico, the Czech Republic, Germany, and Russia. We hear the competition is going to be stiff this year and from the look of the designs submitted by each team, we’d have to agree!
What kinds of sculptures are in the works? Everything from a fiery phoenix to a gargoyle on the top of Notre Dame to a Batman taking on the most famous of Hollywood’s marine life, the shark from Jaws! If you want to catch all the action, make sure you come by for the official Snow Sculpting Competition beginning at 11 a.m. and wrapping up at 4 p.m. on Saturday, January 26! To see the design sketches for yourself, head here.
Snow Days 2013 will also be home to the terrific sculptures of 12 teams of Chicago Public School high school students. They put together some real winning designs last year and we’re expecting even bigger and better works of art this year!
We always look forward to the snow sculpting competition, but that’s not all Snow Days 2013 has in store! We’ll have tons of kids’ activities (like a brand new interactive snowboarding experience), live entertainment inside the Pier on our Family Pavilion Stage, and Snow Games for the whole family from Winter Hula Hooping to a Snowshoe Experience!
Come on down to Gateway Park, January 25-27, for a winter celebration you’ll remember for years to come!
