BLAIR THOMAS & CO., NAVY PIER, THE CHICAGO PARK DISTRICT, AND THE CITY OF CHICAGO DEPARTMENT OF CULTURAL AFFAIRS AND SPECIAL EVENTS PRESENT 18 PERFORMANCES AT 6 LOCATIONS

The Festival Neighborhood Tour fosters an appreciation of puppetry in every corner of the city by presenting three Festival artists—Schroeder Cherry, Interstate Arts and Magali Chouinard—in six locations. These FREE events invite families to share a full day of activity, or to sample performances and drop in on panels as they please. Each show runs 40-45 minutes. This event is family friendly. Visit chicagopuppetfest.org for more information.

In The White Woman, Magali Chouinard takes a tender look at how solitude can be a special place, a place where we discover and rediscover ourselves. By daring to be silent, to move slowly and deliberately, and by steering away from a linear narrative, Chouinard invites audiences to invest themselves in an otherworldly visual poem.

Designed for families and kids, this original piece by Detroit-based Interstate Arts mixes hilarious and bizarre live performers with sweet and spectacular puppets of all sizes in celebration of the universal human experience of eating. PLAY with your food invites audiences to learn urban gardening and cooking how-to’s, hear from a chatty muffin, and get down with the sweet sound of a veggie synthesizer.

In Underground Railroad, Not A Subway, Schroeder Cherry shares the story of a young boy who escapes slavery and run North, encountering free blacks, sympathetic whites, and slave catchers along the way. Will he make it? This 45-minute presentation is performed with a variety of puppets constructed by Schroeder Cherry: rod puppets, hand puppets and wood cut-outs.

This isn’t like the castles you’ve seen before. It’s a space where kids can create their own kingdom and:
– Invent their own fairytale as they prepare a feast in the kitchen or stand guard at the dungeon
– Play whatever role feels right as they cast a wizard’s spell or search for the mystery dragon
– Stay active and energized (even in winter) as they climb the tower or charge the castle door
The possibilities are endless.

The Book of Joseph

The Book of Joseph

January 29 – March 5
By Karen Hartman
Based on the life of Joseph A. Hollander and his family
Directed by Barbara Gaines

Every family has its secrets. Richard Hollander’s remained in an unopened suitcase for fifteen years after the death of his parents. Inside, he found a collection of Swastika-stamped letters written during World War II by a family he never knew—his late father Joseph’s mother, three sisters, their husbands and children. Unable to convince the family to leave Poland, Joseph escaped to the United States where he fought to save his family from annihilation at the hands of the Nazis, and to avoid deportation and death himself. Richard collected his family’s letters in his book, Every Day Lasts A Year, the inspiration for this frequently chilling, often humorous, and always deeply moving drama, staged by Artistic Director Barbara Gaines.

Short Shakespeare! Romeo and Juliet

Short Shakespeare! Romeo and Juliet

February 25 – March 25
By William Shakespeare
Adapted and directed by Marti Lyons

Verona burns under summer’s heat—and the hatred of two families. The Prince decrees: if Montague or Capulet again disrupts the peace, lives will answer to the law. Violence stains Verona’s streets. Against this horror, Shakespeare sets Romeo and Juliet, a tale of true love found—and tragically lost—within an endless cycle of hate. This 75-minute adaptation, told in Shakespeare’s own words, speaks to today’s youth about their own lives. After the performance, audiences are welcome to join the cast for a post-show discussion.
