A Retrospective view of the Pathway

Polk Bros Park

Free and open to the public! Join us in Polk Bros Park for this public art installation’s daily “eruptions,” now through October 1!.

Navy Pier welcomes a new public art installation, “A retrospective view of the pathway” by Roger Hiorns – courtesy of Luhring Augustine, New York – in Polk Bros Park. The interactive piece is comprised of large-scale stainless steel tanks, a compressor, and foam, presenting the idea of continuous change in a joyous and ebullient manner. Mondays-Fridays at noon and Saturdays and Sundays at noon and 4 p.m., the sculpture will produce giant foam clusters, which will be shaped by the wind and spread across the landscape. In this way, the artist engages with the surroundings and blurs the lines between where the city begins and the art ends. The installation will be on view through EXPO CHICAGO (September 13 – 17, 2017) with its conclusion on October 1.

A similar version of A retrospective view of the pathway is in the permanent collection of The Contemporary Austin, Texas for the Betty and Edward Marcus Sculpture Park at Laguna Gloria.

Floating Museum

City Stage in Polk Bros Park

Free and open to the public! The popular Floating Museum is re-envisioned on the lakefront, offering enriched arts and cultural programming during its three-week run.

Untethered by the confines of brick and mortar, Floating Museum moves to its next location at Navy Pier – Chicago’s mission-driven cultural district – with an installation that highlights arts and culture. From Thursday, September 14 through Sunday, October 8, guests can experience this free public installation through sculpture, digital work and performances.

Floating Museum began as a conceptual art and design project with a focus on exploring the cultural capital present in Chicago spaces outside of the downtown corridor. Building on that initial premise, Floating Museum has expanded the Chicago arts scene by literally “floating” from one Chicago neighborhood to another with each installation taking form through collaboration with the local artists and organizations that reside within Chicago’s diverse neighborhoods.

Led by co-directors Jeremiah Hulsebos-Spofford, Faheem Majeed, Andrew Shachman, and Avery R. Young, Floating Museum is a captivating art installation that will be stationed near the City Stage on Navy Pier’s new Polk Bros Park Performance Lawns. This public space will be transformed into a site-specific installation that taps into Chicago’s creative communities and honors the city’s history.

Sticks + Tape | Every Saturday from September 16 through October 7 | 1 p.m. : A collaborative building exercise that guides guests of all ages through the process of creating temporary, large-scale sculptures relying on humble materials.

Panel Discussions |Thursday, September 21 and Thursday, September 28 | 6 p.m.: The panel on September 21 features a discussion with the Floating Museum team regarding museum practices and their vision for Chicago as a “museum campus.” This panel is moderated by Leslie Guy. The panel on September 28 discusses Chicago’s history, monuments and art. Audiences are encouraged to actively engage during panel discussions.

Call + Response | Saturday, October 7 | Noon: Avery R. Young and De Deacon board and dance performance

Politics and power, human rights, and true love are debated with wit and style as the women fight through adversity.

CST’s Courtyard Theater
By William Shakespeare
Conceived & directed by Barbara Gaines
Columbia Women’s Club Scenes by Ron West

This fall, Artistic Director Barbara Gaines stages Shakespeare’s raucous comedy, partnering with longtime Second City writer Ron West, who provides additional dialogue to set the scene. The year is 1919, and, amidst suffrage marches in Chicago, a women’s theater troupe is convening to rehearse their upcoming comedy: The Taming of the Shrew. Each actress in the all-woman ensemble cast performs dual roles: as one of the suffragettes presenting the play, and as a character in their performance of the play. Politics and power, human rights, and true love are debated with wit and style as the women fight through adversity to present their own perspective on Katherine and Petruchio’s courtship.

Rarely has a performer combined humor and an ease of performance in every aspect of the stage and screen more than Chicago’s own Diacos Love AKA Doc Love. Relying on experiences that have taken him from a childhood spent in foster care to the college football gridiron and on to Chicago’s spoken word poetry scene, Doc’s brand of Comedy is an eclectic mix of intelligence and irreverence that crosses cultural lines. He’s appeared on the stages across the country including his recent  tour with one of the greatest comedy legends this era, Dick Gregory. Expanding Chicago’s Comedy scene, Doc can also be seen producing his own shows locally! He is the founder  “F- Last Call” at The Comedy Clubhouse and his weekly show “Laughs on the Lake with Doc Love” at Tiny Tavern, nestled in one of the city’s largest attractions, Navy Pier.

A true renaissance man, Doc’s performance experience also reaches into the realm of dramatic stage and screen acting. With several film credits to his name – including 2014 releases Rural and The 8th symphony and a starring turn in the web based series Lovers and Friends, Doc is on a quest to continuously reinvent what audiences can expect from his creative output. He is also a 15 year veteran of Chicago Theater, most recently appearing on stage in the show Five and a Half Men.

Any event hosted by or featuring Doc Love promises not only laughs but an assortment of live music, spoken word poetry performances, and more surprises thanks to his DONEWAITIN collective – a company founded in 2013 uniting a wide array of performers and promotions professionals under a common goal: perpetual artistic innovation. Whether it’s a hip-hop show performed with a live band, a bill featuring some of the city’s hottest comics, a poetry set or a show with a talk show format, based around a live Q&A session on love, life and pure spontaneity, there’s only one constant with a Doc Love and a DONEWAITIN production – quality entertainment.

Amarillo

Amarillo

Chicago Shakespeare Theater

A World’s Stage Production from Mexico
Directed by Jorge A. Vargas

Chicago Shakespeare Theater is proud to present Mexico’s most celebrated theater ensembles, Teatro Línea de Sombra, in our new third theater, The Yard, as part of the inaugural Chicago International Latino Theater Festival, Destinos. In the largest international engagement of the festival, A man—any man—departs Mexico for a land of dreams: Amarillo, Texas. But he never arrives. Far away, a woman reconstructs his journey, imagining what might have transpired not only for him, but for the thousands of other faceless men and women who have taken the same path—and for those who were left behind. Told through projected images, monologues, movement, and a collage of atmospheric settings evoking layers of national and individual identity, Amarillo is a naturalistic portrait of one (or any) immigrant’s efforts to reach something, somewhere, better. Using visceral imagery, evocative soundscapes, and a myriad of storytelling techniques, the company has built an encompassing theatrical experience, for which they have twice been awarded the title of Best Research Theatre in Mexico (2000, 2005).

Performed in Spanish with projected English translation.

CST’s Courtyard Theater
By Lolita Chakrabarti
Directed by Gary Griffin

The director of last fall’s “must-see” King Charles III helms a fascinating glimpse into theater history, called “fiery and funny” by Time Out New York. In 1833 at the Theatre Royal in Covent Garden, Edmund Kean, the greatest actor of his age, collapses on stage while performing the lead in Othello. He is replaced by a young, black actor, Ira Aldridge—a first for the role on London’s West End. As a bill in Parliament promoting the abolition of slavery sends shock waves through the streets, how will London react to his performance? This multi-award-winning play garnered Lolita Chakrabarti the Critics’ Circle Award for Most Promising New Playwright.
