A Retrospective view of the Pathway

Polk Bros Park

Free and open to the public! Join us in Polk Bros Park for this public art installation’s daily “eruptions,” now through October 1!.

Navy Pier welcomes a new public art installation, “A retrospective view of the pathway” by Roger Hiorns – courtesy of Luhring Augustine, New York – in Polk Bros Park. The interactive piece is comprised of large-scale stainless steel tanks, a compressor, and foam, presenting the idea of continuous change in a joyous and ebullient manner. Mondays-Fridays at noon and Saturdays and Sundays at noon and 4 p.m., the sculpture will produce giant foam clusters, which will be shaped by the wind and spread across the landscape. In this way, the artist engages with the surroundings and blurs the lines between where the city begins and the art ends. The installation will be on view through EXPO CHICAGO (September 13 – 17, 2017) with its conclusion on October 1.

A similar version of A retrospective view of the pathway is in the permanent collection of The Contemporary Austin, Texas for the Betty and Edward Marcus Sculpture Park at Laguna Gloria.

Navy Pier is celebrating the quinceañeras of young ladies throughout the Chicagoland area with free professional group photos on the 15 of June, July and August this summer. The popular cultural destination has teamed up with the National Museum of Mexican Art to host a photo shoot for 15-year-old birthday girls on the base of the Pier’s Wave Wall staircase on the South Dock against the backdrop of the Centennial Wheel. Local young ladies are invited to gather at the Pier in their finest quinceañera dresses for a “class photo” along the lakefront with others celebrating the special milestone.

The photo shoots will take place at the Wave Wall stairs leading up to the Centennial Wheel at the following times each month:

All participating young ladies will receive a link to download a free digital copy of the photo, taken by a professional photographer, along with one complimentary ticket to ride the Centennial Wheel. The photo shoots will be followed by live musical performances from local Latin American bands for participants and guests to enjoy for free.

A popular Latin American tradition, quinceañera is a celebration of a girl’s coming of age, marking the transition from childhood to young adulthood in the Latin American culture. As a mission-driven cultural district, Navy Pier is proud to celebrate diversity and inclusion of people from all walks of life with free, year-round programs and offerings such as these.

This is just one of the many examples of Navy Pier’s commitment to raising its profile as a nonprofit, with continued focus on offering dynamic and eclectic experiences through partnerships and programs, as outlined in the organization’s mission and values. As the Fifth Third Bank Centennial Celebration continues in 2017, the Pier looks forward to introducing more exciting and innovative year-round programming for guests to experience and enjoy for free. For more information on this and other special offerings at the Pier, please visit www.navypier.com.

The Blue Coast Band
Blues
5:15pm – 6:15pm

The Blue Coast Band takes their traditional sensibilities of this music and puts their own spin in it. Years of working with blues greats as well as rock and rollers, gives them the freedom to intuitively mix things up. Their stamp on the music is one that is not over the top, but at the same time definitely not in a retro bag. It’s an honest interpretation.

Sam Cockrell Band
Blues
7:00pm – 8:00pm & 8:30pm – 9:30pm

When there has been a fourteen-year gap between a bluesman’s second and third album, the imagination can supply all sorts of explanations, but singer-songwriter-bassist Sam Cockrell hasn’t been incarcerated, or strung out, or selling dubious products, or even out of the music biz.

Lint Trappers
Bluegrass
2:00pm – 3:00pm & 3:30pm – 4:30pm

The Lint Trappers have built their sound from modern America’s foundational music: acoustic blues, pre-war jazz, vintage country, early gospel, string band and bluegrass, with a grit that places it firmly in the Chicago tradition. You are unlikely to see more reso-phonic guitars on one stage, and the instrumentation can rotate to include mandolin and fiddle, while upright bass and washboard form the solid rhythm section.

Abraham Mellish
Folk
5:30pm – 6:30pm & 7:00pm – 8:00pm

Abraham’s life journey has spanned the globe, which is evident in his sound. At his core, Abraham is a storyteller in the folk tradition with a lyrical breadth that fully encompasses a universal human experience steeped in Liberian roots. Driving bass notes juxtaposed with intricate finger picking establishes an African tinged rhythm that serves as a vehicle for Abraham’s message of oneness, reflection, and peace.

About Cole DeGenova

Somewhere between a soul pop concert, South Side jazz club, slam poetry reading, and punk rock dive bar, lives the music of Cole DeGenova… As a pianist, vocalist, and composer DeGenova has spent most of his life crafting his eclectic artistic voice, beginning his career at age 16 as a jazz pianist around his native Chicago. As a bandleader, he started his funky alternative soul group Cole DeGenova & The Peoples Republic at the prestigious Berklee College of Music, where he released his first album JUST PEOPLE AGAIN in 2009. A few years later, DeGenova released his second album ANOTHER COUNTRY.

Now based in Chicago and Los Angeles, he is both an in demand studio musician as well as a touring performer around the globe. He has worked with Lupe Fiasco, Brett Dennen, Chance the Rapper, Gallant, Latin Grammy winner Lucky Diaz, Meshell N’Degeocello, Paula Cole, James Carter, engineer Eddie Kramer, Hey Champ, Dave Shaw, as well as funk group The Heard and experimental jazz trio Hanging Hearts. DeGenova is also a co-founder and organizer for the Chicago artist collective The Gala. His third album THE RADIO HERO MIXTAPE was released spring of 2015. His song “Hollywood Girl” was chosen as a Finalist in the 2015 American Songwriting Awards.

Navy Pier welcomes world-renowned contemporary artist Nick Cave and international architect and MacArthur Fellow Jeanne Gang for Here Hear Chicago, a new site-specific project that incorporates art, design and performance. The collaboration will be featured at Navy Pier this fall as part of the free public programming for the Chicago Architecture Biennial and EXPO CHICAGO, the International Exposition of Modern & Contemporary Art. The collaborative work is an extension of Navy Pier’s ongoing commitment to offer guests free, one-of-a-kind arts and cultural programming, designed to inspire, educate and connect communities across the city and globe.

As part of Here Hear Chicago, the locally-based duo, Cave and Gang, are set to present a series of live productions in which Cave’s performers will intersect and respond to a field of dynamic, custom-fabricated objects designed by Gang and her practice, Studio Gang. The performance series includes Cave’s newest performance work, Up Right, and internationally acclaimed HEARD. Both feature his iconic Soundsuits, accompanied by Chicago’s most talented musicians, including jazz artist Kahil El Zabar, the Chicago Children’s Choir and others. These and other performances by local artists will be defined by Gang-designed elements.

The first performance is scheduled for Wednesday, September 13 in Navy Pier’s Aon Grand Ballroom at 8 p.m., in time for the opening of EXPO CHICAGO (September 13 – 17, 2017). On Saturday, September 16, the program will move outdoors to Navy Pier’s Polk Bros Performance Lawn and South Dock at 5 p.m. as part of the Chicago Architecture Biennial. The full Here Hear Chicago schedule will be released later this summer. All performances are free and open to the public, with limited and first-come-first-served seating available in the Aon Grand Ballroom.
